THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS

Today we look at the Feast of Trumpets which was the start of the Festival of Tabernacles season held in the month of Tishri at the end of the harvest season. The prophetic significance of these festivals lies in the future, in Christ’s second coming. The first set of festivals represented Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection, Pentecost the coming of the Holy Spirit, and then there was a few months where there were no festivals which relate to the current church period, but then came the feasts around the Festival of Tabernacles which represent Jesus’ second coming, sometime in the future.

The Feast of Trumpets is described in Numbers 29:1-6:

“On the first day of the seventh month hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. It is a day for you to sound the trumpets. As an aroma pleasing to the Lord, offer a burnt offering of one young bull, one ram, and seven male lambs, a year old, all without defect. With the bull offer a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with olive oil; with the ram, two-tenths; and with each of the seven lambs, one-tenth. Include one male goat as a sin offering to make atonement for you. There are in addition to the monthly and daily burnt offerings with their grain offerings and drink offerings as specified. They are food offerings presented to the Lord, a pleasing aroma.”

The feast of trumpets did not really have many special elements to it except for the blowing of two trumpets. Two trumpets were always blown in ancient Israel to give various messages and for various reasons, sometimes one was blown, at other times both were blown, depending on the message that needed to be imparted. One of the reasons that these trumpets were blown was to declare victory in battle and this is a picture we can see here.

This feast represents Jesus as the conquering Hero. It’s ultimate fulfilment still lies in the future when He will return to rule and reign and will finally destroy Satan and his demons forever but already it has begun as Jesus already won a great victory over death at the cross.

Another interpretation is that the trumpets are the trumpets of Ezekiel, with the one trumpet having been sounded when the nation of Israel was formed and then the second one will sound when Jesus comes to establish His Kingdom on earth.

Finally, in our lives, the feast of trumpets also refers to spiritual warfare and how we need to be clothed in the armour of God which can be found in Ephesians 6:10-12. Jesus has already won the victory but we need to stand in that victory as the devil will still try to attack us if we are following God. We need to be prepared by putting on the armour of God and praying without ceasing.

On Friday we will look at the Day of Atonement which was also held at the same time as the feast of trumpets and the feast of tabernacles and has its ultimate fulfilment in the future.
