THE ALTAR OF INCENSE

The last piece of furniture we are going to look at in the Holy Place before going into the Holy of Holies is the altar of incense. This altar was used purely for offering incense to God and we find it described in Exodus 30:1-9:

“Make an altar of acacia wood for burning incense. It is to be square, a cubit long and a cubit wide, and two cubits high – its horns of one piece with it. Overlay the top and all the sides and the horns with pure gold, and make a gold molding around it. Make two gold rings for the altar below the molding – two on each of the opposite sides – to hold the poles used to carry it. Make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. Put the altar in front of the curtain that shields the ark of the covenant law – before the atonement cover that is over the tablets of the covenant law – where I will meet with you. Aaron must burn fragrant incense  on the altar every morning when he tends the lamps. He must burn incense again when he lights the lamps at twilight so incense will burn regularly before the Lord for the generations to come. Do not offer on this altar any other incense or any burnt offering or grain offering, and do not pour a drink offering on it.”

THE TABLE OF SHEWBREAD

The Table of Shewbread

The next item of furniture we get to in the Holy Place opposite the candlestick is the table of shewbread or the bread of the presence. This table is described in Exodus 25:23-30:

“Make a table of acacia wood – two cubits long, a cubit wide and a cubit and a half high. Overlay it with pure gold and make a gold molding around it. Also make around it a rim a handbreadth wide and put a gold molding on the rim. Make four gold rings for the table and fasten them to the four corners, where the four legs are. The rings are to be close to the rim to hold the poles used in carrying the table. Make the poles of acacia wood, overlay them with gold and carry the table with them. And make its plates and dishes of pure gold, as well as its putchers and bowls for the pouring out of offerings. Put the bread of the Presence on this table to be before me at all times.”

THE CANDLESTICK

The Candlestick

In this post we are going to look at the candlestick, which is the first piece of furniture we will look at in the Holy Place. It looked similar to a Jewish menorah today and can be found in Exodus 25:31-40:

“Make a lampstand of pure gold. Hammer out its base and shaft, and make its flowerlike cups, buds and blossoms of one piece with them. Six branches are to extend from the sides of the lampstand – three on one side and three on the other. Three cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms are to be on one branch , three on the next, and the same for all six branches extending from the lampstand. And on the lampstand there are to be four cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms. One bud shall be under the first pair of branches extending from the lampstand, a second bud under the second pair, and a third bud under the third pair – six branches in all. The buds and branches shall all be of one piece with the lampstand, hammered out of pure gold. Then make its seven lamps and set them up on it so that they light the space in front of it. Its wick trimmers and trays are to be of pure gold. A talent of pure gold is to be used for the lampstand and all these accessories. See that you make them according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”

THE BRAZEN LAVER

The Laver

The brazen laver was like a wash basin at which the priests used to wash before entering the tabernacle or presenting a sacrifice. It can be found in Exodus 30:18-21:

“Make a bronze basin, with its bronze stand, for washing. Place it between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it. Aaron and his sons are to wash their hands and feet with water from it. Whenever they enter the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water so that they will not die. Also when they approach the altar to minister by presenting  a food offering to the Lord, they shall wash their hands and feet so that they will not die. This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants for the generations to come.”

And in Exodus 38:8:

“They made the bronze basin and its bronze stand from the mirrors of the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting.”

THE BRAZEN ALTAR

Brazen altar

The first piece of furniture we come to in the Old Testament tabernacle is the brazen altar. This was the altar at which sacrifices were made and it is described in Ex 27:1-8.

“Build an altar of acacia wood, three cubits high; it is to be square, five cubits long and five cubits wide. Make a horn at each of the four corners, so that the horns and the altar are of one piece, and overlay the altar with bronze. Make all its utensils of bronze – its pots to remove the ashes, and its shovels, sprinkling bowls, meat forks and firepans. Make a grating for it, a bronze network, and make a bronze ring at each of the four corners. Put it under the ledge of the altar so that it is halfway up the altar. Make poles of acacia wood for the altar and overlay them with bronze. The poles are to be inserted into the rings so they will be on two sides of the altar when it is carried. Make the altar hollow, out of boards, it is to be made just as you were shown on the mountain.”

THE OUTER COURT AND THE GATE

This is the second post in our series on Old Testament typology, and more specifically on Old Testament Typology with relation to the Old Testament tabernacle. When God gave Moses instructions for the construction of the tabernacle He was very specific and Moses had to follow those instructions to the letter because there was a much deeper meaning behind the tabernacle than simply its construction and Jewish worship, this tabernacle would be a prophetic picture of Jesus Christ and what was to come in the New Testament.

For starters the outer court in the Old Testament tabernacle was made from an outer covering of badgers’ skins and then inside this was rams’ skins died red. The badgers’ skins would have been quite plain and their nature protective in order to protect the tabernacle from the elements. This reminds us of Isaiah 53:2 “He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of the dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to Him, nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him.”

The Pre-Noahic Flood

In the previous two articles we have looked at how there was life on earth before Adam and what this was like. We looked at what exactly Genesis 1 says and what it does not say as well as looking at Ezekiel as another chapter in the Bible which depicts clearly that there was life on earth before Adam. Today we are going to look at the flood that caused the earth to become formless and void as it was in Genesis 1:2.

What was the Pre-Adamic World Like?

In our previous article, available to all members, we posted on what exactly happened in Genesis 1. In this post we want to look at how Ezekiel 28 depicts a pre-Adamic world. When we look at passages like those in Ezekiel we see a lot of activity on a pre-Adamic earth and if we read it correctly we can see that these things took place before Genesis 1.

What Really Happened in Genesis 1 and 2?

Is the earth really approximately 6000 years old? Why do we believe in dinosaurs and pre-historic animals but they don’t come into the Biblical record? When did God create angels and when did Satan fall? If we believe that the whole earth really was created in Genesis 1 and 2 there are a lot of questions that need answering, but let us have a look at what God really taught us happened in Genesis 1.

I am going to use the King James Version of the Bible in this article because I know that some of my readers only believe in the King James Version and those who believe in other versions aren’t normally opposed to the King James Version:

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth: and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

And the earth brought forth grass, and the herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the third day.

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days, and years. And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth; and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning was the fourth day.

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and the fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind; And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind, and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God said let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat; and it was so. And God saw every thing that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”

Now let us look at this in depth. We will notice that the boundaries of each day are ‘And God said’ to ‘And the evening the morning were the … day’. Within these boundaries it tells us what God did on those days.

On day one which extends from verse three to five God separated the light from the darkness

On day two which extends from verse six to eight, God separated the waters by placing the heavens in between. Note that the waters were not created here, the Spirit had already been hovering over the waters in verse 2, before day 1.

On day three, verses 9 to 13, God gathered the waters together so that dry land ‘appeared’, note that He did not create the dry land here, it simply appeared when He separated the waters. After this was done grass, herbs and fruit trees came forth.

On day four, verses 14 to 19, God placed lights in the firmament of the heaven to rule over the days and the nights, the seasons and the years.

On day five, verses 20 to 23, God created the fowl of the air and the fish of the sea.

On day six, verses 24 to 31, He created the land animals and man.

Note that nowhere does it say that God literally made the earth in any of these days. On day three land appeared when the waters were gathered.

Another important point to note is that in verse 28 God tells man to ‘replenish the earth’, how could man ‘replenish’ it if there had never been anything there before? since replenish means to ‘fill something up AGAIN’ or “Restore to a former level or condition’.

It is clear therefore that the eath must have existed before Genesis 1 and that Genesis 1 is telling of a new creation, though not of earth itself.

In our articles under the pro membership we will be looking at what the pre-Genesis world actually looked like by studying other chapters of the Bible. We hope this has given you some food for thought though and that you have enjoyed it.
